'When Sam met Angie' - new book by Learning 2XL Director Amanda Beech with Graham Manville

Performance management has often been seen as something for large corporates, but Amanda's new book on the balanced scorecard makes it easy for SME's managers to use the same principles on a smaller scale. She has co-authored the book with Graham Manville, Assistant Dean for Enterprise at Southampton University.

'When Sam met Angie', is part novel, part handbook on how to use performance management, and in particular, the balanced scorecard, in small scale enterprises. The story shows how two small business owners develop their companies, dealing with competitors, failing markets, uninspired teams, and chaotic business planning, by clarifying their goals and focussing their efforts in the right way.

Each chapter is succinct and introduces the theory of the balanced scorecard, shows you how to apply it and offers some 'take away' ideas that can be applied in the manager's own time. There is also sage advice from 'my old gran' and some real life case studies from local businesses.

( P.S. - Never heard of the Balanced Scorecard? - See our Management Tip page for more information!)

Front cover of 'When Sam met Angie'

"We seem to have a propensity in business to either make our models far too complex, or think that each one, on its own, can solve all of an organizations' problems. When Sam met Angie does a stellar job of simplifying the concepts around performance measurement and management and applying them to our personal and business lives through real situations... and allows us to come along for the journey. Thanks to this special book these concepts are no longer hoarded by academia or large corporations, but available for any of us to apply in a pragmatic way."
